How the National Safety Council Found LMS Success by Streamlining Fragmented Systems
The Challenges
- Legacy platform architecture creating issues with maintenance and customer access
- Limited course enrollment controls that didn’t work with complex certification requirements
- Outdated infrastructure that desperately needed optimization
The Outcomes
- 65,000 users and 80+ instructors successfully migrated to new system
- Improved UX/UI and portal functionality
- Platform positioned for growth to 100,000+ users
“The Academy of Mine team streamlined and integrated our various in-house legacy systems in their LMS, saving our team hundreds of hours on maintaining the previous legacy platforms.”
Time for an LMS Upgrade
With 65,000 users (and counting) and an upcoming launch of a new multi-tier certification program, the NSC knew they needed help. Their legacy platform architecture was outdated and no longer sufficient for their current needs. Maintenance issues created unnecessary work, new features couldn’t be added, and their customizations were incompatible with modern LMS platforms. They were struggling to keep information (and workflows) unified across multiple separate systems, each handling a small part of the process. Their infrastructure also needed an overhaul to be able to support their ambitious growth targets. That’s when they came to us.
NSC's Transformation
After getting a thorough list of their needs and where their current system wasn’t working for them, we set to work on a plan. Over the course of three months, we were able to:
- Modernize their platform by recoding all legacy customizations to improve long-term maintenance issues and ease of use
- Migrate 65,000 users to the new codebase
- Update their seat model by adding content-based seat allocation to portals, which gave them precise enrollment limits at the individual course level (rather than portal-wide)
- Create a multi-tier certification system by building a comprehensive Occupant Protection Specialist program with four certification tiers, automated requirement tracking, and instructor-led in-person class management
- Optimize infrastructure software and hardware to support 100,000+ users
- Perform extensive QA by completing multiple mock migration rounds with production data to ensure the go-live date went smoothly

A snapshot of the work that went into NSC's LMS migration
All of this was in addition to more granular specifications, like ensuring students attended a webinar for a specific amount of time, sending automatic notifications about new courses to former students, and building conditional logic into the checkout process based on whether the customer selected in-person or hybrid delivery.
Streamlined Safety Courses
All of the work was done in time for the Occupant Protection Specialist program to launch. In just three months, we were able to:
- Migrate 65,000 users to the modernized platform
- Simplify maintenance processes by updating the codebase
- Improve UX/UI and add superior portal functionality
We also grandfathered in 80+ instructors into the new certification system within the first month. Now, their platform is positioned to handle 100,000+ users without infrastructure failures or maintenance headaches, and they’re ready to move forward with other optimizations to their courses.
